Product Overview

White aluminum oxide is electrically fused from Bayer alumina, resulting in a white, angular abrasive with slightly higher hardness but lower toughness than brown aluminum oxide. This sharp, fast-cutting abrasive is silica-free and specifically designed for grinding steels with high hardness.

Its combination of high hardness, sharpness, and chemical stability makes it well suited for bonded and coated abrasive products used on hardened steels. White aluminum oxide can produce a matte finish or anchor pattern on metal surfaces and is sometimes used in closed-system blasting for high-purity or specialty applications.

The material's heat resistance and corrosion resistance ensure consistent performance in demanding grinding and surface preparation work.

Key Characteristics

  • High hardness - Higher purity and more friable behavior than brown aluminum oxide
  • Sharp and angular - Fast cutting action
  • Chemically stable - Heat and corrosion resistant
  • Silica-free - Safer for blasting applications
  • Lower toughness - More friable fracture behavior than brown aluminum oxide
  • Versatile - Suitable for multiple abrasive and non-abrasive uses

When to Use

Best for grinding steels with high hardness:

  • High carbon steel
  • Alloy steel
  • High speed steel
  • Hardened steel applications requiring higher purity abrasive

Note: White aluminum oxide has slightly higher hardness but lower toughness than brown aluminum oxide. Choose white for harder steels; choose brown for general metalworking and applications requiring greater toughness.

Common Applications

Abrasive Applications

  • Grinding wheels and cutting tools
  • Coated abrasives (sandpaper, belts, discs)
  • Metal lapping and polishing
  • Pressure blasting and surface preparation
  • Tumbling and vibratory finishing
  • Deburring operations

Non-Abrasive Applications

  • Precision investment casting molds
  • Spray coating material
  • Catalyst carrier
  • High temperature ceramic
  • Specialty refractory applications
  • Chemical fillers (high-purity requirements)
